Russia: Putin Launches Major Military Mobilization as Tensions Rise
The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has launched the biggest military draft in Russia since 2011, summoning approximately 160,000 young men between the ages of 18 and 30 to boost the nation’s armed forces.
This enlistment drive, scheduled to run for one year, follows several months after Putin disclosed his intention to boost Russia’s armed forces to approximately 2.39 million members, which includes having around 1.5 million active soldiers—an increase of 180,000 within the coming three years.
Rear Admiral Vladimir Tsimlyansky has stated that the newly drafted individuals will not be sent to participate in Ukraine as part of Russia’s so-called "special military operation."
Nevertheless, past reports have indicated that conscripts were killed in combat within Russia’s frontier areas, and several were deployed to fight in Ukraine during the initial phases of the comprehensive conflict.
As reported by the BBC, the present draft covering the period from April to July persists amid ongoing conflicts, even with the United States' attempts to facilitate a truce.

Typically, conscription in Russia takes place during the spring and autumn seasons. However, this year’s recruitment drive aiming to enlist 160,000 individuals marks an increase of 10,000 from the numbers recorded over the corresponding period last year.
Furthermore, starting January 2024, the maximum age for the draft was increased from 27 to 30 years old, thereby enlarging the number of young men qualified for military service. Draft notifications will be delivered via traditional mail as well as through the government portal, Gosuslugi.
In addition to its standard conscription efforts, Russia has also enlisted significant numbers of contract soldiers and even sought out recruits from North Korea. These measures were taken as part of an expanded military buildup, which was prompted by substantial casualties in Ukraine—where more than 100,000 Russian troops have been reported dead—with actual figures possibly being significantly higher.
