Driving Experience
The Civic Hybrid represents a fresh addition for 2025 to the reliable sedan lineup. After exiting another vehicle, I put this $30,100 Honda through its paces. a $130,000 Mercedes-Benz EQS . You'd think this would make for an uneven contest, and indeed it did; the straightforward, inexpensive Honda proved much more appealing than the oversized Mercedes.
Since I mainly evaluate electric vehicles, manufacturers typically provide highly equipped versions for media testing. As a result, many of the cars I assess tend to be bulky, overly complex, and costly. Entering the Civic felt like a refreshing change. The straightforward design and well-placed controls brought back memories of how much I enjoyed driving the Civic Type R in the past. Road & Track days.

Cruising through the city, the 3,208-pound Honda gives off a nimble and agile feel, enhanced by its hybrid system. The steering is precise and reactive, making this model notably more captivating compared to any sport utility vehicle available today; although it doesn’t match up to a Type R, it still stands out significantly.
It's equally enthusiastic. The 200-horsepower hybrid powertrain comes directly from the impressive Accord Hybrid but benefits from reduced weight in this model. Thanks to the electric motor, it delivers a robust 232 lb-ft of torque instantly upon acceleration, providing urban driving characteristics similar to those of a pure electric vehicle. As Honda’s intelligent dual-motor hybrid setup lacks a traditional gearbox, it operates more akin to an EV, avoiding the abrupt power transitions often experienced in hybrids made by other manufacturers like Hyundai and Kia.
Certainly, even an exceptional hybrid powertrain cannot rival the seamless performance of a pure electric vehicle. During my test drives, I noticed that the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine seemed strained during highway accelerations, accompanied by considerable noise which did not proportionally rise with increasing speeds. Honda provides adjustable regenerative braking through paddles behind the steering wheel; these allow for more significant deceleration upon lifting off the accelerator, yet they do not offer a genuine single-pedal drive experience. However, this isn't something to worry about since the brake system has been finely tuned. It's nearly impossible to tell when it switches between using friction brakes and regenerative braking.

The remaining aspects of its street performance maintained the Civic's established reputation. It offers ample comfort while still having sufficient suspension stiffness to remain stable and engaging through winding roads. Road and engine noises are effectively suppressed; however, Honda hasn’t fully resolved its long-standing issue with road noise yet. On highways, the Civic's tires produce noticeable droning sounds, and an unusual electric-like hum became apparent during acceleration. While tolerable in short bursts, this, along with the intrusive road noise and seats lacking adequate bolstering, makes the Civic ideal as a daily driver but only passably suitable for extended journeys. As they say, you get what you pay for.
Fuel Economy
The Civic Hybrid boasts an estimated fuel economy of 50 mpg in the city, 47 mpg on highways, and 49 mpg overall. However, during my test drive, the vehicle achieved efficiencies around the mid-30s according to the onboard monitor. This lower figure accounted for periods of idle time as well as numerous instances driving up highway ramps and tackling other challenging conditions. It’s important to remember that actual mileage can vary from these Environmental Protection Agency figures; nonetheless, the stated rates remain quite remarkable.

A completely electric vehicle would still be more environmentally friendly, but without access to home charging, filling up a small Honda might end up being less expensive. Its primary utility lay in supporting CarPlay/Android Auto features or displaying straightforward text-based navigation otherwise. Apart from these aspects, there wasn’t much else to it; even the rearview camera quality was poor.
If you're someone tired of overwhelmingly large, glaring displays, you might still find the Civic’s cabin appealing. However, those who prefer extensive technology and advanced features may want to consider alternatives. For instance, upgrading to the Civic Touring model grants access to Honda’s updated infotainment system with Google integration displayed on a 7-inch screen. Alternatively, investing in a Chevrolet Equinox EV could offer comparable value post-tax credits; although its overall interior quality seems less refined compared to the Civic’s, it boasts superior display capabilities.

The Civic at least offers practicality. Although sedans aren’t ideal for carrying large items, the roomy rear seats and ample 14.8-cubic-foot trunk space make it suitable for many couples or smaller households. For those needing more cargo area—such as bike storage—the hatchback model is recommended, starting from $31,300. Everyone else can enjoy the updated Civic, now larger than previous generations of Accord models.
Tech Features
For better or for worse, there aren't numerous technological amenities worth mentioning. The Civic includes typical equipment such as CarPlay and Android Auto along with a digital display panel. However, beyond these basics, the list doesn't extend much further. Apart from the safety functions which we'll discuss later, the Civic Hybrid remains fairly stripped down among contemporary vehicles. This even applies to minor details like the stock audio system, featuring what might be some of the poorest sound quality encountered recently. Given its price tag of $30,100, having heating elements in the seats starts to feel rather generous.
The entire budget was allocated for that advanced, seamless drivetrain and suspension system. Given that all you truly require besides this is a phone connectivity and air conditioning, I would consider that a reasonable exchange.
Safety & ADAS
The Civic includes as standard equipment Honda Sensing, which is the brand’s collection of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This setup offers features such as automated emergency braking, warnings for when you're leaving your lane along with assistance to keep you centered in your lane and adaptive cruise control. The latest version from Honda simplifies the frontal sensing technology by reducing it from a dual-camera stereo system to a more streamlined single-camera unit.

I'm not sure whether this has worsened things or if the competition has simply improved, but I find the Honda Civic's advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) to be among the least impressive. The car struggled with staying within lanes, and its adaptive cruise control didn't perform smoothly in dense traffic; as a result, I deactivated it altogether.
I wouldn't say that's a deal-breaker for me. I've operated numerous vehicles priced at $50,000 without having lane-centering technology as part of the package, which was also true for my personal vehicle. However, keep in mind that several affordable brands such as Hyundai and Toyota offer advanced systems that surpass what Honda provides in their lineup.
Honda dedicated additional effort towards enhancing the car's passive safety features. The Civic Hatchback was honored with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top accolade, known as the Top Safety Pick + award. The Civic Hybrid comes in two trim levels across two body types, without significant additional package options. Below are the base prices for each configuration, inclusive of the destination fee:
- Sport Hybrid sedan: $30,100
- Sport Hybrid hatchback: $31,300
- Sport Touring Hybrid Sedan: $33,100
- Sport Touring Hybrid hatchback: $34,400
The Touring version comes equipped with upgraded wheels, a premium 12-speaker Bose sound system, wireless smartphone charging capability, and an enhanced 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display featuring Google Built-In functionality. This infotainment setup includes free access to Google Maps for three years; beyond this period, continued use will require purchasing a data plan.
Verdict
When considering an economical sedan, your most budget-friendly brand-new electric choices include the $44,130 Tesla Model 3 and the $39,045 Hyundai Ioniq 6. While both models offer strong performance, keep in mind that leasing the Hyundai qualifies for a $7,500 tax break only under specific conditions, particularly since the base version might not meet all preferences. Despite the available incentive, the Tesla still comes out as roughly $6,530 more expensive compared to a Honda Civic. It’s worth noting that these vehicles could also be pitted against pre-owned alternatives like a second-hand Model 3 or perhaps even a recently released Chevrolet Bolt. However, comparing a newly purchased vehicle directly with older models may seem somewhat unfair—were fairness disregarded entirely, one could argue this choice should extend further into highly devalued luxury EVs such as the Jaguar I-Pace.

Honda highlights that among purchasers under 35, the Civic leads with the Accord close behind as top choices. However, both electric vehicle alternatives might pose challenges without access to home charging facilities, particularly considering this demographic typically leans towards models like the Civic.
Even though I'd like to motivate all young adults to acquire an electric vehicle, I understand that current economic conditions do not make it feasible. At least not at this time.
